A Remarkable Journey Of Barari in Nepali Food Industry

Barari – Nepal’s First Prawn Cracker & Quality Foods

The journey of Barari began 18 years ago with a powerful mission to bring healthy, quality, and locally produced food into every Nepali home. It started as the nation’s first pasta manufacturing company, and proved that food crafted with integrity in Nepal can compete with even the foreign imported products. The mutual dedication between the company and its customers has finally paid off. As of today, Barari proudly exports its products to eight different countries, marking its presence in the international market.

How was Barari started?

Everything goes back to October 16, 2007, when a group of visionary individuals formed an organization called “Nepal Pasta Food Company”. They entered the local market only with pasta. Initially, the people were unsure about the product, and the sales were low. However, as the word of mouth grew stronger, people showed love towards the product, and the company saw hope. It gradually expanded its food variety by adding noodles, prawn crackers, masala, soup, flour, and many more. With the increased product range, the company needed a brand name to establish lasting value in the market. That’s when the team, led by Founder Chitra Prasai, created “Barari”. Fast forward to today, Barari is not only a brand in Nepal; it's more than that - it's a part of every Nepali's daily life.

The Nepali culture of people sitting in a chautari, where people freely talk, laugh, and strengthen their relationships, reflects Barari. The name is inspired by the fact that food, just like a chautari, holds people together.

Challenges

The initial step is always difficult. Barari too faced some difficulties. They first started in a small building in Kathmandu and installed a factory on private land. However, the company faced high electricity bills, and local communities were not very cooperative. So, Barari moved its factory to Hetauda and established itself as Nepal Pasta Food Company there.
Everything was new for the company and the country. The concept, the industry, the market, and even the consumers were all new. At that time, local people didn’t know anything about pasta, and few who did used foreign products. To introduce pasta to the locals, the company launched campaigns in the schools and colleges, offering free meals to the students.

The suppliers and retailers could not trust that the Nepal-based food company could compete with already established foreign products. The company had to heavily invest in marketing and packaging to give the product a premium look. Moreover, the production equipment was not advanced, and the distribution was another challenge to conquer.

Nonetheless, Barari made it to the top by staying positive and committed to their goals. The ambition of the organization, as Chitra Prasai always says, was to make people believe that Nepal has it all; there is only a need for someone who has a vision.

Commitment to Quality

From the very start, Barari’s main focus has always been Quality, and no matter the circumstances, the company always stayed true to its main motto. To date, Barari strictly checks the quality of its products at every step.

Selecting the ingredients:

Barari closely works with local farmers, providing education and support to produce the finest raw materials, which are fresh, pesticide-free, and directly from the farms.

Processing:

The ingredients are transported to Barari’s factory located in Hetauda Industrial Area. Processing takes place in a clean and well-maintained environment, and the hygiene and safety of both products and employees are non-negotiable.

Packaging:

The finished products are then packed accordingly and are now ready for use. The packaging is designed so that the product remains safe until the consumer uses it.

“Your health is our concern.”

How did Barari stay relevant for 18 years?

Over the years, food consumption patterns in Nepal have evolved, and Barari has listened to its customers, continuously adapting to the change. The company perfected the recipes and introduced healthy alternatives to the traditional products. By following market trends and customer feedback, Barari changed to modern packaging without losing its familiarity. This simple and smart approach has helped the company to grow internationally, competing with the top food company in Nepal.

Products

Barari began with just one product, and after years of dedication, it has expanded into a food manufacturing company with over 30 products. It serves different kinds of pasta, which include authentic macaroni, fusilli, penne, and sewai. Besides pasta, Barari also produces noodles, soups, masalas, flours, papad, prawn crackers, salt, soya chunks, and snacks. All of these products are designed to suit the Nepali taste without compromising on international food standards.

The idea behind every product is quite simple: provide good, honest, and affordable food that is easily accessible to everyone. This is the main reason why Barari has become a family name in Nepali kitchens.

Product Spotlight: The Story Behind Penne Pasta

Barari makes every single item with love and dedication. But what stands out amongst them is Penne Pasta. It is one of the initial products that gained popularity and is known as the best seller in the market. When the market was filled with lower-quality alternatives, Barari offered its Pasta with genuine flavor and taste.

The imported penne pasta at that time failed to achieve the perfect taste when cooked in the local style. Barari’s research team saw an opportunity and started six months of iterative testing. The result was indeed successful, and it became Nepali’s go-to dish throughout the year.

“Today, people only want Barari.”

Is Barari amongst the Bulk food suppliers in Nepal?

Currently, Barari is a higher taxpayer company in Nepal. The organization runs a large distribution network both in Nepal and abroad. As of 2025, Barari successfully operates a distribution network with over 1,900 wholesalers and 400 dealers. This effective distribution system reaches all rural and urban areas in different countries, making Barari one of the top food export company in Nepal.

With its success in Nepal, Barari is entering the international market. We are now available in more than 8 countries, including markets such as the USA, UAE, Canada, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and many more, taking the authentic Nepali taste to international shelves.
